Abstract Objective:To observe effects of removing ovary on lumbar intervertebral disc, establishing rat model of lumbar intervetebral disc degeneration.Method:8-month-old healthy female SD rats were randomly divided into blank group, sham operation group and model group, 10 rats in each group. The blank group were subjected to no disposal. Rats of the sham operation group only underwent the resection of a bit fat.The model group underwent the resection of bilateral ovaries.all the rats were fed under the same conditions, All rats were sacrificed after feeding 13 weeks, the histomorphology of lumbar disc, notochord cells and the changes of the ultrastructure of nucleus pulposus cells were observed.Result:Tissue morphological grading and notochord cells quantity:there were significant differences between the model group and blank group( P<0.05), the difference in the blank group and the sham operation group was not significant(P>0.05).Level of degenerative nucleus pulposus cells observed under electron microscope:model group > blank group, It had no significant difference between the blank group and the sham operation group. Conclusion:Rat model of lumbar intervetebral disc degeneration was established preliminary through ovary resection of female rats.
