Abstract Objective: To analyze and discuss the clinical effect of metal stents on the treatment of esophageal carcinoma stricture. Method: 36 patients diagnosed as esophageal carcinoma stricture from July 2010 to July 2013 were selected as the subjects for this study, and all of them were treated with endoscopic placement of covered metal stents. All the clinical materials from these patients were analyzed retrospectively, and the treatment method and effect were assessed. Result: All the 36 patients with esophageal carcinoma stricture had 100% success rate after treatment. The patients’ main clinical symptoms like difficulty in swallowing, irritating cough, vomiting after eating had been improved obviously. The grading-score of difficulty in feeding after 2 weeks had decreased from 3.26 before treatment to 1.03. The main complications after the endoscopic placement of covered metal stents were including pain, bleeding, esophageal restenosis, gastro-esophageal reflux and stent shifting, and the complications were reduced or disappeared through subsequent treatment. The follow-up visits showed that the patients’ survival time had been improved significantly. Moreover, the patients’ self-rating anxiety scale and self-rating depression scale before and after treatment had a significant difference( P<0.05). Conclusion: The treatment of esophageal carcinoma stricture through endoscopic placement of covered metal stents has significant treatment effect, simple procedure, high safety, small surgical trauma to patients and a high success rate that it’s worth for being widely used in the clinic.
