Abstract Objective:To investigate a lateral spinal cord injury model with less trauma and better replication. The model would be usefull for the study of various new medicines or stem cell therapy on spinal cord injury.Method: A modified self-made needle was used to insert into lumbar spinal cord of SD rats without opening the cavum medullare, the lateral spinal cord injury was established. The grasping ability( movement function) and sensory function by temprature of hind-limbs were measured and compared with contralateral side at different time points after injury for insure the model was successfully.Result:It showed that lateral spinal cord injury model of rats appeared obvious lateral paralysis ,but without incontinence of urine and defecation. Also none of them had infection locally or systemically. The model was successfully. Conclusion:The spinal injure model made by self-made modified needle insertion into SD rats lumbar spinal cord is easy to handle ,repeat, and induce obvious lateral paralysis without severe complications.Due to its advantage of connecting, some medicines or stem cells could be injected conveniently at the same time while surgery processed, then provides an experimental basis to explore the molecular mechanism of spinal cord injury regeneration difficulty.
