Abstract Objective: To analyze the effect of Orem self-care model combined with enteral nutrition support on intestinal mucosal barrier function in elderly patients with esophageal cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Method: A total of 110 patients with advanced esophageal cancer treated in the Hongda Hospital of Jiamusi University from February 2019 to February 2021 were selected and divided into control group and study group according to different intervention methods. The control group was given simple enteral nutrition intervention, and the study group was given Orem self-care model based on the control group. The changes of self-care ability, quality of life, nutritional indexes, intestinal mucosal barrier function indexes and complications were compared between the two groups. Result: After the intervention, the scores of self-care ability and quality of life in the two groups increased, and the scores of self-care ability and quality of life in the study group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05); after the intervention, the levels of serum ALB, PA and TF decreased and the levels of ET, DAO and DLA increased in the two groups. Compared with the control group, the levels of serum ALB, PA and TF in the study group were higher and the levels of ET, DAO and DLA were lower (P<0.05). The incidences of adverse reactions in the two groups were 14.55% and 3.64% respectively, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion: Orem self-care mode combined with enteral nutrition can effectively improve the intestinal mucosal barrier function and prognosis of patients with advanced esophageal cancer after chemotherapy, with less adverse reactions.
