Abstract Objective: To explore the effects of acceptance and commitment therapy on psychological stress response, coping modes and psychological flexibility of intensive care unit (ICU) patients' family members. Method: A total of 70 ICU patients were selected from June 2021 to June 2022 in Nanping Second Hospital, and 70 family members who were responsible for the medical decisions of the patients were taken as the research subjects. The 70 family members were divided into the control group and the observation group according to the random number table method, with 35 cases in each group. The control group was given routine psychological care, and the observation group was given routine psychological care + acceptance and commitment therapy. The psychological stress response, coping modes and psychological flexibility were compared between the two groups. Result: After 2 weeks of nursing, the each dimensions and total scores of stress response questionnaire (SRQ) in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). After 2 weeks of nursing, the each sub-scale and total scores of the medical coping modes questionnaire (MCMQ) in the observation group were significantly better than those in the control group (P<0.05). After 2 weeks of nursing, the scores of the acceptance and action questionnaire-second edition (AAQ-Ⅱ) in the observation group was significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Acceptance and commitment therapy for ICU patients' family members is helpful to reduce their psychological stress response, improve their positive coping modes and improve their psychological flexibility.
