Abstract Objective:To evaluate the clinical effects of three different mandible treatment methods in thecombined radical operation of tongue cancer. Method:37 cases of tongue cancer were collected and followed-up fromJanuary 2011 to December 2012. These patients were divided into three groups : Group A of 9 cases were treated withmandibular segmental resection; Group B of 15 cases were treated with mandibular rectangular resection and Group C of 13cases were treated with retaining of integrated dentition and mandible. Then, the feasibility of different mandible treatmentmethods in the radical operation of tongue cancer was evaluated, and the operation effects were observed. Result: Amongthe 37 cases of tongue cancer had been followed-up for 18 months after operation, there were 5 cases of local recurrence, 7cases of cervical lymph node metastasis, and 1 case of distant metastasis. However, tumor recurrence was not found in the
incision of homolateral mandibular buccal-lingual gingival mucosa or remained mandible. Moreover, there were no obviousrelations between different mandible treatment methods and recurrence rate or site of recurrence of tongue cancer, thedifference was statistically significant(P>0.05), and the oral function of Group C recovered best. Conclusion:Providedmandible and mucoperiosteum of lingual side are not invaded by primary foci of tongue cancer, the clinical evaluation ofmandibular rectangular resection is superior to that of mandibular segmental resection; and preservation of the integrality ofdentition and mandible is superior to that of mandibular rectangular resection.
