Abstract Objective:To investigate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase 2,9 in oral mucosa, hyperplasia and dysplasia and to discuss the correlation of MMP-2,9 with oral leukoplakia. Method:The statistical evaluation was used to analyze immunohistochemical results.The study was carried out on clinically and histologically proven 15 cases of normal mucosa and 31 cases of hyperplasia and 35 cases of dysplasia using anti-MMP-2 and anti-MMP-9 antibodies. Result:MMP-2,9 are both present in cytoplasm. In epithelium, the positive rates of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in normal
oral mucosa,hyperplasia and dysplasia was 20.0%,22.6%,34.3% and 6.7%,9.7%,34.3%,respectively.Under epithelium,in fibroblasts,the positive rates of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in above three groups was 0,12.9%,14.3% and 6.7%,25.8%,80.0%,respectively.There was no significant difference in the expression of MMP-2 between three groups(P>0.05),but the expression of MMP-9 was higher in dysplasia than in normal oral mucosa and hyperplasia (P<0.05).Conclusion:MMP-9 maybe plays a role in the occurrence and development of leukoplakia.
