Abstract Objective: To observe the effect of hydrocolloid dressing with wet heat compression in preventing mechanical phlebitis of peripherally inserted central catheter( PICC). Method: 135 patients were randomly divided into three groups, experimental group 1( 45 cases), experimental group 2( 45 cases), and control group( 45 cases). The experimental group 1 used hydrocolloid dressing after PICC for 7 days, received wet heat compression after 24 hours, had
been covered for 7 days( 30 min/times, 2 times/d). The experimental group 2 received wet heat compression after 24 hours, had been covered for 7 days( 30 min/times, 2 times/d). The control group received routine nursing. Result: The incidence of phlebitis in the experimental group 1 was significantly lower than that in the experimental group 2 and control group, with significant difference( P<0.05). Conclusion: Hydrocolloid dressing with wet heat compression can prevent mechanical phlebitis of peripherally inserted central catheter( PICC).
